Jefferson Parish was named in honor of U. S. President Thomas Jefferson when the parish was established by the Louisiana Legislature on February 11, 1825, a year before Jefferson died.
According to the 2000 census, Jefferson had a population of 455,466. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department also maintains a special Deputy, Film action star Steven Seagal.
